Two special edition of HTC’s current and last generation flagship phones are set to receive the latest version of Android operating system from Google. If you know anything about the Android world, you have already guessed which edition is receiving the update. Yes, it’s the Google Play Edition.

Google Play Edition phones were introduced to provide customers a clean, stock Android interface that didn’t have any customization from the manufacturer. Forget HTC’s Sense or Samsung’s TouchWiz UI, if you’re holding a Google Play Edition smartphone, all you’ll have is the stock Android user interface.

But there’s also a major benefit of holding a Google Play Edition smartphone at hand; and that’s the ability to receive updates. Much like Nexus devices, Google Play Edition smartphones receive new Android updates earlier than the regular smartphones that have a manufacturer’s interface on top of them. Following suit, HTC is rolling out the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to HTC One M8 Google Play Edition and HTC One M7 Google Play Edition.

However, for HTC One M8 Google Play Edition owners, the news comes as no surprise. The update was supposed to be rolled out last month. But due to various issues, the update has been delayed. HTC has finally announced that it has begun rolling out the new version of Android for One M8 Google Play Edition phones.

While HTC One M7 Google Play Edition hasn’t begun receiving Android Lollipop update just yet, it has been confirmed that the phone will indeed receive the update soon. So if you’ve got an HTC One M7 Google Play Edition, you’ll be happy that you got yourself the Google Play Edition instead of the regular one.

If you use a carrier model of HTC One M8, you’re likely to receive the new version of Android from HTC around February next year, unless there’s any significant delay. This timeframe has been given by HTC itself. And if you use an HTC One M7, you may have to wait a bit longer or look for alternative ways to install Android 5.0 Lollipop on your device.

Are you using a Google Play Edition smartphone? How happy are you that you decided to buy this edition instead of the carrier model?
